Overview
Project Overview:
Pehla Anda is a short film set in a rustic Punjabi village that approaches the topic of menstruation with warmth, humor, and sensitivity. The story follows a father and brother navigating an awkward yet endearing situation when the daughter experiences her first period. Instead of adopting a heavy tone, the film uses lighthearted storytelling to break societal taboos and normalize open conversations.
My Role as Director of Photography:
This project marked my debut as a DoP, where I was responsible for shot composition, lighting, framing, and color grading. The goal was to maintain authenticity while balancing emotion and comedy. Wide shots captured the essence of village life, while close-ups emphasized expressions and subtle humor.
Visual Approach:
Natural lighting and earthy tones created an inviting rural atmosphere, complemented by handheld shots in chaotic moments and static frames in silent, awkward exchanges. Each frame was designed to visually support the film’s warmth, innocence, and message.
Learning & Outcome:
Pehla Anda taught me how to blend comedy and emotion visually—maintaining realism while enriching the story’s rhythm through cinematography. It strengthened my understanding of how light, framing, and pacing can transform sensitive subjects into engaging narratives that connect with audiences.
